New Year Alders

                                                            watermedia on Yupo 9x6
Nature rewards the adaptable not necessarily the strong or even smart. I see this constantly when painting. If I can tolerate the feelings of uncertainty, even failure, and stay with the process, my hopelessness can turn to joy in an instant. Or really get mired down. But then, it`s easier to walk away having fought the good fight.
With all the blessings of the past year, I hope to be a lighter being in 2014. My anxiety is no longer protective. During the studio tour, someone asked me what my favorite watercolor brand was. Without hesitation, I said Holbein. Later I realized I only had two tubes of it. In colors I couldn`t get in a cheaper version. Now I`ve always used lightfast archival materials but a higher level of quality affects the experience. Makes it more sensual and satisfying. I can afford it now so I bought all new colors from Holbein and put them in a fancy new palette;
Since life does seem short, at least to us in the second half, I hope to notice that struggles can end too.

I like the alder painting... so subtle, like the fog that's been enveloping us lately.
Nice palette of new colors. They look just like your paintings. Now we need a list of what you've chosen and why. Not that having the same colors in my palette will enable me to paint like you, but just because the how and why interests me.

I agree with Jo -please tell us the colours in your next post??

Wishing you all the best, Randall, and that your anxiety level lowers considerably (I need the same wish for myself as I tend to worry and fret about things I can do nothing about). A new palette of colors! What a great way to start off the new year. For me, I've put a few new favorites in my palette and removed some I no longer used - perhaps a little spark in the new year for me, too :)

And I completely forgot to say how wonderful this painting is - so soft, misty, cold, loose...

What you say about tolerating uncertainty and failure in hopes of hitting your stride really resonates with me; it's what I've been thinking, and feeling, and trying to do.
A fresh new palette is a great start (I love Holbein colors too--they have so many lovely purples).
The painting is gorgeous--a beautiful drawing and great icy colors.

Love this Randall!!! I was telling my friend about you yesterday and how deeply you connect with nature. It is such a beautiful expression of love that you have for our mother earth in her many forms/seasons. I love that you gifted yourself with these paints. So so good to see. You always inspire me.
May this be the year of deep peace.
