January Wetland

                                                        watercolor on Yupo 12.5 x 11"

When faced with the massive amount of summer green, I always have my winter references of Minto Brown Island to work with. This is my 'go to' place for color, the wetlands never disappoint.

Fog on the Sound

I used to take the train to Seattle fairly often and loved the ride. It parallels I-5 but the experience couldn`t be more different, especially in the rain. Instead of the blinding splashes of the big trucks, the visibility from the train is terrific. If you sit on the west side [left going north] the views of the Ridgefield Wildlife Refuge are expansive and peaceful. It`s hard to believe there is such a gorgeous stretch of waterfront left undeveloped. Then comes the south end of Puget Sound with it`s lovely little islands just off shore. Nearing Tacoma, mighty Mt. Rainier  is suddenly looming to the east.  The trip is so enjoyable, you arrive at Union Station happy and ready for the Great City!

December Dusk

From a study I did last year which came from a wet, dark walk on Mt. Talbert in Dec. of 2011. My instincts were correct when I saw the autumn color through the gloom. What I didn`t expect was the maroon pink hillside. I`m nearly always painting at dusk, when I actually see it while in the woods, I`m so glad to be there.

Late Winter-Minto Brown

Minto Brown Island nature preserve in Salem Oregon has been the source of many of my paintings.  It`s swampy, funky beauty always satisfies, I just wish it were closer.
I bet if I painted in a duck making a water landing, I could sell it.

Wetlands Somewhere [again]

Look familiar?
Occasionally someone comes over to work with me.
This began as a demonstration the other day to show a mixed watermedia technique. Just as I did with the first version in oil last December, I chose a cloud as the subject because the sky is the most flexible, forgiving element in a landscape. I don`t usually repeat a painting this closely, but when I`m teaching, I want to paint things I`m fluent with to make my point.
