Tree Shadow - Brush Creek Afternoon

It is always nice to come home, no matter the adventure.
In New Mexico the other day, I was packing books off a shelf and found the top little painting mooshed against the back of the cabinet behind the books. Of course I had forgotten all about it, I had never photographed it so I did then and there with my phone. I then proceeded to shame my friend for her ingratitude.
The other watercolor is Wyoming but it could be any river flowing out of the mountains and into the valleys of northern New Mexico.

Absaroka

Mountains from memory. Look at them long enough and then you don't have to. I suspect anyone in northwest Oregon could draw Mt. Hood and get that distinctive hump in there too. This improvisation is named after a range in Wyoming.
It's painted on a paper formulated for use with oil paint, I think there's a resin that protects the fibers from the acidic paint. Too absorbent for my tastes. I have a new piece in progress where I sprayed some matte acrylic on first. Much better.

Rocky Mountain Sketch

This began as a doodle trying out some new paper. Soon the dark sky had me remembering the drive from Laramie to the Grand Tetons last spring. The Rockies are always awe inspiring but in the heavy overcast that day they looked brooding and mysterious.
One thing we can all be happy about, this is not an election year.
Happy New Year!

Cottonwoods Creek Clouds - studio view

Wyoming again, from my stay at Brush Creek Ranch.
John got a new I-phone 5 and took a panoramic picture of me painting. I`m working in oils there and the other lit area is for watercolor. Two separate spaces for each medium, my dream came true!

Overcast Yellowstone Study

A view north of Mammoth Hot Springs. The clouds didn`t lift to let me see what was back there.
No doubt it is spectacular. Driving up to the Springs from the geyser basins in the south part of the park is nothing short of miraculous. Within mere minutes the landscape dramatically changes into something altogether new and breathtaking several different times. Last spring when I visited. the weather was cool and misty so the vistas were rarely completely visible. Not knowing what to expect, I didn`t mind at all. The clouds and fog just heightened the other worldliness of it.

Storm on the Lake

Yellowstone Lake. A helpful young employee at the hotel told us 3G reception was possible on a hill overlooking the lake. Although it wasn't close, we found it, read our mail and saw this magnificent storm advancing over the water.
Following David Page Coffin`s advice, I painted this on Fabriano Artistico that I had applied a thin coat of acrylic matte medium. It acts as another bit of sizing preventing too much absorption. Yupo, my usual watermedia 'paper', is completely non absorbent and the difference between it and normal papers is huge, requiring different techniques. A little layer of acrylic on cotton fiber papers bridges the gap somewhat.
