Surf on Second Beach

From 1987.
Today I`m off to the coast to paint seascapes, something I`ve wanted to do for a long time. I need to be there to do it right.

Wet Winter Forest 2

It never seemed quite right. Not enough focus.
Since I`m mostly puttering around my studio before my painting adventure at the coast, I decided to go back in. I think it`s better.
I had an unusual party on Saturday in honor of Carol Marine, a new resident of Oregon having lost everything in the fires last summer near Austin TX. All were artists except John who slowly stepped out of the room when he thought our discussion of glues went on way too long. I was the last to realize it was a gathering to introduce ourselves to each other. I thought my guests were all Carol`s friends. They are now.

Sauvie Island Dusk

A daily painting done from a sketch made in 2001.
I`m at loose ends. Later in the week I`m going to the coast to paint seascapes. I have a place secured with an actual painting studio. I have been wanting to do this for a long time. In the interim, I`m goofing around with small stuff.
That green is mostly Holbein`s Compose Green #2.

Wetlands Morning

This was painted on a new paper by Arches specially formulated for oil paint. I pretty much hate it, like painting a paper towel! I spent way too much time on this piece because my efforts were immediately absorbed into a black hole of fibers. Really disappointing! When I saw it I was excited, I wouldn`t have to gesso it first. Now I think gesso ,with a sealant of acrylic medium, is the only way to make it usable. As a final insult, it`s nearly impossible to photograph.

Seed Pods

I needed to go into Michael`s Craft Store yesterday. Painters are always showing me cool stuff they bought there. This is daunting but I decided I`d explore a little bit. My timidity was justified. Every supply you`d need to make anything at all was available. It was overwhelming and busy! at 9 a.m.! I was also trying to get used to new glasses, a big mistake. I staggered out sort of nauseous with some water soluble graphite pencils and a pad of paper and did this drawing last night.

Winter Copse

Most painters probably experience this occasionally; work that seems clever at the time is sold and later, on review of the photo, looks unresolved and embarrassing. Just as often, a temporary frustration causes me to destroy something that actually had promise. I could fill a gallery with worthy 'lost' paintings. Oh well, I live in the moment in my studio. Here`s an example from last winter that didn`t survive.
